A hotel that grew into a city block
Adolph Wilhelm Krasnapolsky took over a small coffee house on Dam Square in 1855 and spent the following decades buying neighbouring buildings, installing electric light early, and roofing a courtyard in iron and glass to create the Winter Garden — still one of the most photographed breakfast rooms in the Netherlands. The hotel now runs from Dam Square back to Warmoesstraat, joining wings of very different periods.
Today it operates under Anantara, which added a layer of contemporary hospitality to the historic bones: a refreshed lobby, restored heritage rooms, a wellness floor, and dining that ranges from a Michelin-starred room to relaxed all-day eating. With 402 rooms and suites it is by far the largest hotel in this collection, and the only one that can reliably accommodate groups, conferences and last-minute bookings in peak weeks.
Rooms and suites
Scale brings range. Entry categories are efficient, modern and well-insulated; heritage and premium rooms in the older wings carry higher ceilings, ornamental details and, in a handful of cases, direct views over Dam Square towards the Royal Palace and the Nieuwe Kerk. Suites include duplex and corner formats, and the best of them look straight down the square.
Because the hotel spans multiple building generations, room quality varies more than at the smaller properties here. The upgrade from a standard to a heritage or Dam-facing category is the single most consequential decision you will make about this stay.
The White Room and the rest of the food
The White Room occupies a dining room dating to 1885, with the original white-and-gold neo-Louis XVI plasterwork intact, and holds a Michelin star for refined contemporary cooking with a strong classical technique base. It is one of the very few instances anywhere of a starred restaurant working inside a preserved nineteenth-century hotel room rather than a modern box.
Around it sit a brasserie-style all-day operation, an Asian-influenced restaurant reflecting Anantara's heritage, and bar service off the lobby. Breakfast in the Winter Garden is worth waking for even if you eat elsewhere.
Wellness
The spa and wellness floor offers treatment rooms, sauna and steam facilities and a properly equipped gym — a practical, well-run operation rather than a destination spa. For long stays or business trips the gym hours and the size of the fitness floor are genuine advantages over the smaller canal-house hotels.

Frequently asked
Will Dam Square noise reach my room?
Front rooms hear the square, especially on summer weekends. Request a rear or courtyard-facing room if you are a light sleeper, and keep the Dam view for a short stay.
How far is Centraal Station?
Roughly 800 metres — about ten minutes' walk straight down the Damrak with luggage.
Is The White Room open to non-guests?
Yes, and it books out. Reserve several weeks ahead for weekend tables.
